Earl Kent was the most devoted counseling official. The king accepted his suggestions and advice on many important issues. When no one dared to say anything against the king's will, Earl Kent stood up and began to say something favorite for Cordelia. The infuriated king told him to shut up; otherwise he would lose his life. Earl Kent's straightforward advice just made the king angrier. Lear exiled his most devoted official, and gave him only five days to leave Great Britain. If he were found in Great Britain on the sixth day, he would be put to death.
Cordelia now had nothing. She lost her father's love and she got no presents from her father. Under this situation, Duke Burgundy did not want to marry Cordelia any more. As a contrast, the King of France understood why Cordelia lost her father's love. Holding the hands of Cordelia in his, the King of France told Cordelia that her morality was a valuable dowry more important than a kingdom. He asked Cordelia to say good-bye to her two sisters and her father, and be his wife -- the Queen of France. He promised Cordelia that the kingdom under his control would be more prosperous than her sisters'.
